Our Story

Richard and Gill Alton met while living in Bristol, with corporate roles regularly taking them up the M4.

Following a redundancy, Richard took a leap of faith and entered the mortgage world. After that, he moved into a brokerage, where a bit of luck strikes their tale. Unbeknown to him, the owner of the company wanted to retire. Over a cuppa, Richard made a flippant comment about being interested if the business was to come up for sale. The next day, he got a call to ask if he was serious. In 2005, the eponymously named Alton Mortgages was born (sitting alphabetically right at the top of search lists is a bonus!)

Initially, only Richard worked in the company. But during 2007, Gill did all her mortgage exams in the evening and at weekends, around two very young children, left her corporate job and joined Richard in the business. Eventually, she moved away from mortgages into what really makes her tick – insurance!

The business survived the credit crunch and thrived even during Covid, and the company’s growth over the years has meant two office moves to allow for expansion each time and more team members to come aboard. Alton Mortgages currently has an eight-strong staff.

While in Bristol (way back when), Richard started investing in Buy to Let property way before BTL mortgages were even available mainstream. They still hold three properties in Bristol and have since added more properties to their portfolio through an investment focus led by Gill. They have been active landlords for over 25 years, so Richard has a wealth of knowledge to impart to clients keen to build a property portfolio.

Customer Service has always been at the heart of the business, as they know how frustrating it is to be left hanging or chasing updates, so their mission is to be one step ahead. This ethos has been fundamental in ensuring continued growth for the business.
